How are business travel emissions quantified?
There are three principal methodologies which are simplified below:
Fuel-based calculation: This involves analyzing the amount and type of fuel consumed. By reviewing fuel receipts and reports, and then applying established emission factors, the associated greenhouse gas emissions can be calculated.
Distance-based estimation: This focuses on the length and mode of travel. The method requires details such as total travel distance, countries visited, and equipment/vehicle types used. Once obtained, the travel distance is multiplied by the specific emission factor for each mode to derive emissions.
Expenditure-based approach: Here, emissions are estimated based on the expenditure associated with various travel methods and then applying secondary Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (EEIO) analysis emission factors.
